Increase the greenhouse gas benefits from protecting forests
Data collection in progress
Iberian Highlands
Spain
Problem: Most of the forests in the Iberian Highlands landscape are managed for timber extraction. The timber industry hinders carbon storage in mature trees, which is interrupted by logging.
Action: Rewilding Spain is signing agreements with landowners (mostly local municipalities) to protect mature, old-growth forests, and is also developing economic incentives to retain mature forests. These protected old-growth forests will ensure carbon is stored in the long term.
Indicator: The additional carbon sequestered as a result of the protection of forests, compared to forestry management for timber, will be calculated as an indicator of the climate change benefit provided.
Methods
For each old-growth forest that is protected, the climate change mitigation benefits will be calculated based on the Verra VM10 or VM45 standards.
Results
The baseline value for this indicator is 0, as no forests had been protected by the project. The first agreements to protect old-growth forests were signed in 2024 and this page will be updated the assessments of the carbon benefits of these protections when they become available.
