Increase number of children engaged in conservation activities

Data collection in progress

Iron Curtain to Green Belt

Bulgaria

Problem: There is a low level of awareness of nature restoration and its potential benefits for local communities in the project area. In addition, many young people leave the area because of a lack of local employment opportunities.

Action: The project will develop a new nature education programme for schools in the region to promote understanding and pride in the region’s natural heritage. Participating in these events will help to inspire the next generation of conservationists in the region.

Indicator: The project will assess the effect of the education programme by measuring the number of children who, having received training as part of the project’s educational programme, wish to continue with similar activities in the future. The indicator will provide information about both the success of training for teachers in delivering the environmental programme and the enthusiasm with which the teaching is received by the children.

Methods

The project will record the number of events held and the number of children to whom the nature conservation education programme is delivered. In the future, additional events will be offered to these same children, through their schools, which include additional trainings, field trips, participation in the Ornithology Olympiad and youth conservationist club meetings. The rate of uptake of these additional activities will be recorded. At the end of the project period, the percentage of children who took part in the initial programme and then chose to attend further activities, will be calculated.

Results

The baseline for this initiative is zero, as no children had been reached at the start of the project.

Since the project began, the educational programme has been developed and the main educational activities began with the September 2023 school term. Preliminary results from the participation in the first year of the educational programme are available in the table below. These are interim results, however, and do not reflect the participation of the full academic year (which was yet complete at the time of reporting).

This table will be updated once the full academic year is completed, and then updated annually after that, as the data becomes available.
