Iron Curtain to Green Belt

Bulgaria

Problem: There is low awareness about local sustainable resource use opportunities and a lack of support for sustainable economic development of the area. This has led to a scarcity of employment opportunities and many people have left the area to seek work in cities or overseas.

Action: The project will support the creation and development of local nature-based enterprises and promote the Green Belt region as an ecotourism destination. The project will set up partnerships with local food and wine producers to develop marketing based around wildlife and will work with the Forestry Service to build a business plan to develop income from tourism and non-timber forest products.

Indicator: The achievements of the project towards improved socio-economic conditions based on the natural capital of the area will be assessed via the number of sustainable businesses initiatives and the number of partnership agreements signed with these nature-based enterprises.

Methods

The number of signed partnership agreements will be directly available to the project staff and reported annually.

Results

The baseline value for this indicator in 2022 was one informal partnership (with a local winery that supports the Eastern Imperial Eagle) and zero formal partnerships with nature-based enterprises.

The first informal partnership then led to a wider and longer-term partnership with 9 eco-friendly wine businesses in the region and the development of a product line named “Birds of Sakar”. These enterprises agree to environmental standards, such as maintaining natural grass cover, preserving trees and shrubs, and not using pesticides on their land.

This page will be updated as more annual data becomes available.
