Problem: SABUKO’s restoration work demands the adoption of political measures to permanently protect grasslands from overgrazing.
Action: To increase pressure on policy-makers, SABUKO is raising awareness to maximize the impact and visibility of the project, and serve as an advocacy tool to convince policy-makers of the urgency of the project activities.
Indicator: The number of recommendations adopted by policy-makers will indicate that SABUKO’s continued advocacy and awareness-raising efforts have been effective, including through new area-based protections.

The SABUKO team holds policy advocacy meetings and collaborates with stakeholders to promote sustainable land management practices, protect biodiversity, and address issues like overgrazing. Photos: SABUKO.
Methods
SABUKO is using a multi-faceted approach and therefore measures their media engagement efforts and policy advocacy work separately. They also quantify any resulting outcomes from these combined approaches. All three categories are collected on an annual basis.
Indicators to quantify media engagement:
- Number of new items and stories generated, both in traditional media outlets and on social media platforms, related to grassland recovery
- Estimated audience reached through both platforms
Indicators to quantify policy advocacy:
- Number of stakeholder meetings held
- Number of attendees to stakeholder meetings
- Number of recommendations prepared for policy-makers
Indicators to quantify outcomes:
- Number of policies or legislation improved
- Number of development projects (with negative environmental impact) mitigated
- Number of stakeholder collaborations
This indicator builds on monitoring established by the Iori River Valley project on policy change.
Results
SABUKO has collected all indicators for its first year, 2023. Table 1 below presents the results so far.

We will update this page as SABUKO continues their policy advocacy work.
