Iron Curtain to Green Belt
Bulgaria
Problem: Given the substantial natural capital and exceptional wildlife that exist in the landscape there is significant potential for the development of a nature-based tourism economy in the Green Belt region. However, there is currently a lack of awareness and insufficient support and capacity to develop a sustainable tourist economy in the region.
Action: The project will support the creation and development of local nature-based enterprises and promote the Green Belt region as an ecotourism destination. The project will also work with the Forestry Service to build a business plan to develop income from tourism and support the development of visitor centres.
Indicator: The number of visitors to the project area will demonstrate the effectiveness of the network of nature-based enterprises established by the project and project’s progress towards improving socio-economic prospects based on the natural wealth of the area.
