Increase number of tourists visiting the Iberian Highlands
Data collection in progress
Iberian Highlands
Spain
Problem: Over recent decades, this landscape has suffered from a decline in services, lack of investment and limited employment opportunities, resulting in a lack of economic opportunities and rural depopulation.
Action: The Iberian Highlands project will promote environmentally conscious tourism at the sites it is rewilding, by improving facilities and information available to tourists. This will help stimulate local economic activity and also contribute financially to the management of the rewilding sites.
Indicator: The number of tourists visiting rewilding areas in the Iberian Highlands project will help to assess the effect that rewilding can have on developing a local nature-based economy that benefits people.
Methods
The number of tourists visiting the tourism centres in the Natural Park will be used as one measure of the change in tourist visits. In addition, in areas purchased for rewilding by Rewilding Spain, people counters will be installed to count the number of visitors using the site.
