Improving

Iberian Highlands

Spain

Problem: Over recent decades, this landscape has suffered from a decline in rural goods and services, lack of investment and limited employment opportunities, resulting in a lack of economic opportunities and rural depopulation.

Action: The is encouraging active engagement by local people, as well as non-local people such as Spanish and international students, as volunteers in rewilding initiatives and to build a new sense of pride and hope in one of the largest and wildest natural areas of Europe. This will also help to overcome a lack of knowledge and awareness about rewilding across society.

Indicator: The number of people volunteering to help with the activities organized by the Iberian Highlands project will indicate levels of engagement.

Methods

For each volunteering activity organised, the number of volunteers that participate will be recorded. Other volunteering opportunities, such as internships, will also be recorded. The total number of volunteers will be reported annually.
