Boosting Inclusivity

Building skills for fair and inclusive approaches to landscape restoration in Europe.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration has created strong momentum for restoring degraded ecosystems in Europe. Yet large-scale restoration succeeds only when social justice is part of the process. Meaningful participation, fair sharing of benefits, and balanced rights and responsibilities are all essential. When these are missing, restoration can lead to conflict and unsustainable results.

Existing tools, such as the INTRINSIC guide developed by BirdLife International, Fauna & Flora and partners, address these social dimensions but lack European examples. This project is adapting global guidance to European realities, helping practitioners manage conflict, apply social safeguards, and navigate land-use challenges in areas facing rural change.

What the project will do

The project is building the capacity of restoration practitioners to plan and deliver inclusive, fair projects. It is developing tailored training materials and case studies on community participation, conflict management and social safeguards, with practical examples from across Europe.

Training will be delivered both in person and online, creating a cohort of practitioners equipped to embed fairness and inclusion into their work. Outcomes will be reviewed to strengthen the materials and share lessons more widely.

Through this work, the project is helping to make restoration in Europe more socially inclusive, resilient and enduring.
